TALKING PLAYLISTS WITH...

The Two Lips

Welcome to “The Artist’s Playlist Journal”, a content series where emerging artists use playlist curation as a form of journaling.

This entry is a little different. While it’s not a classic Playlist Journal session (no journaling prompts for playlist curation this time, hehe), I had the chance to join The Two Lips at their °1824 press conference with Universal Music Group, chat with them, and even ask a couple of questions—about playlists, of course! 🙂

Andrea & Jewlz's Playlists

Current rotation tracks that shape The Two Lips’ sonic identity, mood, and story

meet THE TWO LIPS

What happens when two besties turn their late-night conversations and debriefs into music? That’s exactly what Andrea and Jewlz are mastering with The Two Lips (formerly The Tulips).

This promising Los Angeles-based duo creates dreamy, vulnerably raw indie pop that feels like a soundtrack to your thoughts and experiences.

After the success of their song “still love you (todavía)” which beautifully blends English and Spanish, The Two Lips have released their latest singles, ““talk” and “clue” continuing to build on their honest and ethereal sound.

"Making music is visual for us: we ask, what playlist or movie scene does this belong to? Playlists help us create a world, and that’s how we build our music."

They make it clear: they’re not just two girlies — they’re two women sharing their stories through songs that hit hard and offer the kind of honest, needed conversation that feels like a hug.

Drawing from their Latino and Filipino roots and inspired by a diverse range of artists—from The Marias, Lily Allen, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Belanova—Andrea and Jewlz “tulipify” their sound, as they describe it, writing and sharing songs that feel truly genuine.

Reflecting about life & Playlists

X: If you could talk to yourselves from two years ago, what would you tell them?

A: We were both thinking about this one, because two years ago we were in such weird places. Like, 23 is the worst year of your twenties — honestly, 23 and 27. I wasn’t looking forward to 23, and I’m definitely not looking forward to 27. We were both going through hard breakups, and that’s kind of how we came together. With every low, there’s a high — and for us, that high was starting to make music together.

J: If I could talk to past-Andrea, I’d tell her not to apply to grad school. And I’d tell myself I do have the skill and talent to make it in this industry. Just… believe in us more.

X: I saw you both have weekly Spotify playlists with your current rotation. How do playlists fit into your creative process?

J: We’re definitely the type of people who listen to the same 10 songs every couple weeks. It really depends on what we’re going through and what we’re gravitating towards. When we get into the studio, we use some of those songs as reference tracks for the producer. So playlists definitely influence our creative process.

A: Making music for us is very visual — like, what playlist would this song fit into? Or what movie scene? We create a world for ourselves through playlists, and that helps us build a world with our music

Xavi's Listening Notes

A few months ago, Spotify's algorithm (thanks!!!) recommended “favorite apple,”and just like that, I was hooked. I added it immediately in my go-to playlists.

Not long after, I listened to “still love you (todavía)”, hitting a perfect mix of emotion and vibe that pulled me deeper into The Two Lips’ universe.

Their newest releases, clue and talk, keep that intimate honesty alive while lifting their sound with beautiful, thoughtful production.

Getting the chance to chat with Andrea and Jewlz made me feel even more connected to their music and story. I’m really excited to see how The Two Lips grow—and fingers crossed, catch them live someday soon.
